Case Study Assignment: Daniel, aged 27, relocated to Essex County, NJ from Houston, Texas, with his girlfriend Ally after accepting a job with Amazon. Daniel’s health insurance will become effective within 60 days. Ally is pregnant with her first child and has a history of miscarriage(s). Since relocating, she has struggled to access consistent prenatal care. She also expresses to Daniel that she feels “down”. Ally’s pregnancy is complicated by gestational diabetes, placing her in a high-risk category for pregnancy. The nearest clinic that offers specialized prenatal services is located 7 miles away. Ally reports feeling unheard by providers, anxious about her delivery, and may be experiencing perinatal/prenatal depression. New Jersey experiences higher rates of maternal mortality. Gestational diabetes may also increase long term mortality rates and other risks for both the mother and child. Early screening and diagnosis, along with access to prenatal care, and culturally competent care and support systems may reduce maternal health risks and mortality and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
